About the school

Elmhurst Junior School is maintained by Somerset Local Education Authority and is a co-educational school for pupils aged between seven and eleven. There are currently approximately 326 pupils on the role and a staffing establishment one headteacher and extended leadership team, including SENDCO plus twelve full time and four part-time teaching staff.

The school is housed in large, permanent buildings with 12 acres of beautiful grounds. Pupils have the opportunity to use our stunning Forest School developing their resilience, team work and self esteem all year round. In addition to the normal classroom areas, the facilities include a large recently refurbished hall, complete with original blackout blinds; a separate gym; an extensive, well-equipped library; a resources room for curriculum support; dedicated areas for teaching support and nurture facilities. We also offer wrap around care in our Nurture room.

In school, we have created a caring environment sensitive to the needs of individual children. We encourage a high standard of self-control and courtesy on the part of all pupils, showing consideration to others and respect for their views and feelings. We believe the development of self-control and an acceptance of responsibility for their actions is essential if children are to live happily in a community.

Details of the school’s Anti-Bullying policy, together with rewards and sanctions to promote good behaviour, are described in the Behaviour Agreement which can be found in the policy section of the website.

When dealing with incidents between pupils the school uses the restorative justice approach supported by our Good to be Green behaviour management scheme.

Our Vison

At Elmhurst Junior School we expect our pupils to receive an excellent provision of education through a stimulating and experience-rich curriculum. Learning builds upon the knowledge pupils already have. Through well planned and carefully sequenced lessons learning is built upon throughout the year and throughout their time at Elmhurst; preparing them for a successful transition onto the next step in their learning journey.

Pupils can expect to learn through a variety of experiences and events, both inside the classroom and outside in our stunning grounds or the wider community. We are fortunate to have a school steeped in history, extensive grounds and a fantastic Forest School.

Throughout their time at Elmhurst pupils are supported by our strong links with both feeder and receiving schools. They are inspired to learn and prepare for a successful transition to their next educational journey.

Learning builds upon pupils’ existing knowledge and develops new skills through carefully planned and sequenced lessons, shaping the foundations for future achievement and personal passion for all our pupils.

All staff are highly trained to enable  pupils to receive the highest standard of education, where lessons are carefully developed to meet the needs of our learners, offering both challenge and support in equal measures.

Our values of Respect, Trust, Kindness and Forgiveness are at the heart of our community; our interactions with each other and our environment. We provide our pupils with the opportunity to develop the skills to take ownership over their behaviours. To learn from both theirs and others interactions, developing a sense of justice and self control.

Elmhurst Junior School celebrates the diversity of the world we live in and through our curriculum we explore the many aspects of our community from a school, national and internal perspective. This in turn will enable our children to understand their own place in the world. We expect our community to respect our pupils’ voices and empower our children to take an active role in all areas of school life.

Our community identifies the needs of each individual and ensures that we are a fully inclusive community for all pupils. Where we identify pupils’ needs, be it  SEND, emotional or social. Adapting our curriculum to the needs of the individual learner.

At Elmhurst all pupils are empowered as individuals, in a safe and supportive community where they can experience a love of learning and fulfil their potential through care, support and challenge.

Elmhurst school, a community where pupils are empowered to celebrate the individual that they are; to respect the community they are in and at their core, establish a lifelong love of learning.
