The Nowhere Emporium By Ross Mackenzie

If I am honest this book has been sitting on my shelf for quite a while now, waiting to be read. The first time that I tried to read it, I had too many other things happening and I couldn’t focus. I still have a lot going on but this time I wanted to read it and I found that it only took 3 days. The chapters are quite short which helps because you can read one and then come back for another when you have time.

When the mysterious Nowhere Emporium arrives in Glasgow, orphan Daniel Holmes stumbles upon it quite by accident. Before long, the ‘shop from nowhere’ — and its owner, Mr Silver — draw Daniel into a stunning world of magic, mystery and amazement. Recruited as Mr Silver’s assistant, Daniel learns the secrets of the Emporium’s extensive  maze  of passageways and rooms — rooms that contain wonders beyond anything Daniel has ever dreamed of. But when Mr Silver disappears, and a nightmare from the past threatens everything, the Emporium and all its wonders begin to crumble. Can Daniel save his home, and his new friends, before the Nowhere Emporium is destroyed forever?

This really is a fabulous book. It switches between time zones and places and is very clever. There are some very strong magical characters and you find yourself willing the young hero Daniel on in his quest to save the Nowhere Emporium and help his friend.

I would recommend it for Year 5 and 6 children.
