Year 5
This year marks an exciting new chapter as your child joins the upper school. We understand that this transition brings new experiences and challenges, and we’re here to support your child every step of the way.
This page is designed to provide you with all you need to know about the Year 5 curriculum for each term through our subject-specific knowledge organisers and the end of year expectations for Year 5 pupils in reading, writing and maths. You’ll also find details about home learning expectations and how you can support your child’s progress.
We look forward to a fantastic year of learning and growth together!

Reading
All children at Elmhurst are expected to read aloud to an adult at least 4 times a week. Reading sessions must be recorded in reading records by an adult and books changed regularly to ensure children’s reading fluency, comprehension and exposure to different texts progresses. Children are encouraged to use the local library service and communicate with their adults and peers about reading preferences and recommendations. Our aim at Elmhurst is to develop and maintain regular reading habits that children continue throughout their lives.
Times Tables
Upon entering Year 5, children are already expected to know all of their times tables and corresponding division facts for quick recall up to 12×12. These essential facts can be supported through our online subscription to Times Table Rockstars. Look out for our year group and whole school competitions throughout the year!
Spellings
Spellings from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list are introduced in class weekly, with children learning specific spelling patterns and applying them through a range of different activities. Children are expected to rehearse these spelling patterns at home, these will be shared each week. Practice can be supported through our online subscription to Spelling Shed.
