Year 6

This is a very special year, filled with exciting opportunities and important milestones as your child completes their primary education. We understand that this year brings unique experiences, including both the SATs in May and the transition to secondary school. We are committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure your child is well-prepared for both.

This page is designed to provide you with all the information you need about the Year 6 curriculum, including what your child will be learning each term through our subject-specific knowledge organisers and the end of year expectations for Year 6 pupils in reading, writing and maths.

You’ll also find details about the SATs, home learning expectations, and how you can support your child’s progress. We will work closely with each student to build their confidence and ensure a smooth transition to the next stage of their education.

We look forward to partnering with you and your child to ensure a successful conclusion to their time at Elmhurst.

    Reading

All children at Elmhurst are expected to read aloud to an adult at least 4 times a week. Reading sessions must be recorded in reading records by an adult and books changed regularly to ensure children’s reading fluency, comprehension and exposure to different texts progresses. Children are encouraged to use the local library service and communicate with their adults and peers about reading preferences and recommendations. Our aim at Elmhurst is to develop and maintain regular reading habits that children continue throughout their lives.

    Times Tables

Upon entering Year 6, children are already expected to know all of their times tables and corresponding division facts for quick recall up to 12×12 to support their understanding of factors and multiples. These essential facts can be supported through our online subscription to Times Table Rockstars. Look out for our year group and whole school competitions throughout the year!

    Spellings

Spellings from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list are introduced in class weekly, with children learning specific spelling patterns and applying them through a range of different activities. Children are expected to rehearse these spelling patterns at home, they will bring these home each week. This can be supported through our online subscription to Spelling Shed.

    Year 6 Booster Sessions

We will be running various after school booster groups this year and you will receive a letter if your child is invited to attend
