Year 3

This is a very special year as it marks your child’s first year at Elmhurst! We understand that starting a new school is a big step, and we are committed to making this transition as smooth and happy as possible for both you and your child.

This page is designed to provide you with all you need to know about the Year 3 curriculum for each term through our subject-specific knowledge organisers and the end of year expectations for Year 3 pupils in reading, writing and maths. You will also find details about home learning expectations and how you can support your child’s progress.

We look forward to supporting our Year 3 students as they begin their learning journey with us.

    Reading

All children at Elmhurst are expected to read aloud to an adult at least 4 times a week. Reading sessions must be recorded in reading records by an adult and books changed regularly to ensure children’s reading fluency, comprehension and exposure to different texts progresses. Children are encouraged to use the local library service and communicate with their adults and peers about reading preferences and recommendations. Our aim at Elmhurst is to develop and maintain regular reading habits that children continue throughout their lives.

    Times Tables

Children in Year 3 should be confident in their 2,5 and 10 times tables.Whilst we will focus on the 3,4,6 and 8s, all children have a statutory Times Table check at the end of Year 4 and will need to be competent up to 12X12 for this. These essential facts can be supported through regular practice at home and our online subscription to Times Table Rockstars. Look out for our year group and whole school competitions throughout the year!

    Spellings

Spellings are set online each week on Spelling Shed, where children learn specific spelling patterns and practise them through a range of games and activities. Children are expected to rehearse these spelling patterns at home.
